Search intensifies for suspects who shot Phoenix police officer

7-year department veteran continues recovery

The Phoenix Police Department's search for those responsible for the “violent, ambush-style attack” on an officer Friday night has grown, and the suspects are considered armed and dangerous.

Interim Phoenix Police Chief Michael Sullivan on Saturday asked anyone with information or video related to the shooting to share it with police. He also has a message for the suspects.

“I’m going to encourage the folks who were involved in this incident to turn themselves in. We will not rest, we will not stop until we hold them to account for their crimes to the fullest extent of the law,” Sullivan said at a news briefing.

The off-duty officer, who has been with the department of seven years, was shot multiple times Friday night while investigating reports of an attempted armed robbery near 3300 W. Southern Ave., authorities said.

At about 11:30 p.m. March 29, suspects attempted an armed robbery of a vehicle in a parking lot near 33rd and Southern avenues, police said Saturday morning.

“The officer approached this area to make contact with those involved. At least one of the suspects who was armed with a handgun began to fire in the direction of the officer,” police stated in a release.

The officer, who did not use his firearm, suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and the suspects took off before other officers arrived, according to the release.

The injured officer was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was in stable condition Saturday.

“Detectives, professional analysts and technicians are working around the clock investigating this incident,” police officials stated in a release.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Phoenix Police Department or to call Silent Witness at 480(WITNESS) or 480(TESTIGO) and provide an anonymous tip.
