Administrators at Paradise Valley Unified School District will develop additional guidance to help school leaders enforce rules governing public conduct on district property following an Oct. 22 governing board discussion.
The board reviewed proposed revisions to current policy, which addresses prohibited conduct and disruptions on school campuses.
The proposed revisions would remove nine examples of prohibited conduct, including threats, unauthorized entry, drug and alcohol violations, refusal to follow lawful instructions and weapons possession.
Although those restrictions would remain subject to applicable state and local laws and district rules, some board members questioned whether removing the examples from the policy would make enforcement less clear for school administrators.
Board member Amanda Lim questioned whether removing the examples would make it harder for school administrators to understand and enforce the rules.
"I just want to make sure they have the information they need to be successful at their sites, at their fingertips," Lim said.
Other board members supported streamlining the policy but agreed administrators should have clear guidance.
District officials said they would develop a supporting exhibit or regulation containing relevant examples and enforcement information.
The changes were discussed during a first reading and have not received final approval.
