The grand opening of the Cesar Chavez Community Center will take place at 9 a.m. Thursday, the start of a daylong celebration honoring the labor and civil rights activist.

The public is invited to the opening and events that follow on Thursday, March 30, at 7858 S. 35th Ave., in Laveen Village.

The 34,000-square-foot center is an addition to Cesar Chavez Park and houses a fitness center, basketball court, gaming room, multipurpose room, kitchen and "sensory room," according to a release. There also is an outdoor movie theater.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego and several council members will speak along with Andres Chavez, a grandson of Chavez.

Phoenix Parks and Recreation staff also will showcase an art installation, sharing a timeline of Chavez’s life.

The celebration continues throughout the day with an open house-style event for the public. From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., the city invites everyone to tour the center and see the new amenities available to the public.
