Phoenix Parks and Rec partners with State Forty Eight on T-shirts to support hiking safety

The city of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department on Monday announced a partnership with Arizona apparel brand State Forty Eight to release a limited-edition “Take a Hike. Do it Right.” T-shirt. This collaboration aims to raise awareness about safe hiking practices and highlight the importance of preparedness on Phoenix’s desert trails.

The T-shirt is now available for pre-order, with $5 from every sale donated directly to the city of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department’s “Take a Hike. Do it Right.” hiking safety campaign. The funds will support the City’s ongoing effort to increase education and community engagement focused on preventing heat-related and emergency hiking incidents.

“This collaboration helps us promote an important message in a way that resonates with both residents and visitors,” stated Phoenix Parks Director Marty Whitfield in a news release. “Our hope is that by combining the strength of a beloved local brand with our safety initiative, we can inspire more hikers to make responsible choices on the trail and reduce preventable injuries throughout the preserve system.”

The “Take a Hike. Do it Right.” campaign emphasizes essential hiking practices such as hydrating before and during hikes, carrying adequate water, knowing one’s limits, checking weather conditions, avoiding hiking alone and avoiding strenuous hikes during extreme heat. The new T-shirt allows the community to support the City’s efforts while helping to amplify these life-saving measures.

For some Phoenix residents, the mission behind this t-shirt is deeply personal. “My brother Clint McHale lost his life on Camelback Mountain at just 25 years old. This collaboration represents far more than a shirt. It’s an opportunity to educate hikers, encourage responsible decisions, and potentially save lives,” stated Chelsey McHale, a Phoenix safe hiking advocate and partner of the Parks and Recreation Department, in the news release.

The T-shirt is available only on StateFortyEight.com. The city encourages residents to purchase a T-shirt, support the movement and “Take a Hike. Do it Right.”
