New art exhibit to open at Olney Gallery in Phoenix

Gilat Ben-Dor and Jason Hugger present Sapient Sojourns, an exhibit that will take guests to fantastic places with artwork that will inspire the imagination.

The Olney Gallery at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 100 W. Roosevelt St., Phoenix, will host the exhibit from May 26 through June 28. A First Friday reception goes from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 2.

Having lived in four different countries, Ben-Dor is an avid collector of memories from distant lands.

“I hope this ornamental aesthetic invokes joy, passion, and peaceful delight against the sobering heaviness we often encounter in our current world,” she stated in a news release.

Her artwork includes high-texture acrylic and mixed media canvases, watercolor, collage, and silk painting. Ben-Dor studied at L'Istituto Lorenzo de Medici in Florence, Italy.

Hugger’s vibrant oil paintings of surreal desert landscapes reveal the beauty of displaced objects and barren, desolate horizons.

“I want to take them out of the physical world and give them a feeling of traveling to a new and uncharted world,” he stated.

Hugger received a BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design. His artwork has been shown extensively in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area.
