Man dies at scene of Phoenix collision, crash hits city bus

Posted

A 23-year-old man died March 3 in a collision along West Happy Valley Road in Phoenix.

Leo Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that occurred about 6:25 p.m. Sunday near 23rd Avenue and Happy Valley Road, police said.

When officers arrived, they found two men with injuries. One driver was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Kelly did not survive, according to a release.

A Phoenix bus was involved in the collision. It was struck by both vehicles following the initial collision.  The bus was unoccupied at the time of the collision “and properly stopped on Happy Valley Road,” police said.

Preliminary information suggests that Kelly’s vehicle was westbound on Happy Valley Road and making a southbound turn onto 23rd Avenue when it was struck by the other vehicle, which was heading east on Happy Valley Road.

The two vehicles then careened into the parked city bus, which was stopped in a bus pull out on the south side of Happy Valley Road.

Impairment is believed to be a factor, police said.

Any charging decisions will be made after the accident reconstruction process is complete, the release stated.
