On the first day of school at Kyrene del Milenio Elementary School in Phoenix, hundreds of parents and students shuffled through the gates, exchanging high fives, handshakes and hugs with Principal Michael Lamp as he greeted over 500 students and their families returning to campus for the 2026-27 school year.
For about 80 students, Wednesday, July 22 was their first day at a new school after attending Kyrene de la Estrella, one of four schools to close at the end of the 2026 school year.
“We love a challenge, and I think it will be a challenge to help lots of new families and lots of new kids feel welcome, especially with so much change,” said Lamp, who is celebrating 30 years working for the district and was once a principal at Estrella.
