Former Phoenix motel converted to housing for women

Motel turned U.S. Vets residence will focus on women escaping domestic violence

A developer plans to repurpose a former motel and veteran housing site along Grand Avenue in west Phoenix into an affordable housing complex focused on helping women trying to escape domestic violence.

The 4.9-acre property, northwest of the corner of 33rd and Grand avenues, is designated for commercial zoning, but residential uses are allowed. Phoenix’s Alhambra Village Planning Committee last week unanimously recommended approval a density waiver Tuesday, Sept. 28 that would allow for the motel units to become permanent multifamily residences.

The Planning Commission will vote on the density waiver during its Thursday, Oct. 7, meeting.
