Special oxygen mask helps Phoenix firefighters save family dog

Posted

Phoenix firefighters rescued a dog from a smoke-filled apartment in Phoenix last week, using a specially designed oxygen mask to resuscitate the animal.

Firefighters responded to reports of a fire Thursday afternoon near 19th Avenue and Dunlap and arrived to find a single apartment filled with heavy black smoke, authorities said.

“Upon arrival, fully turned-out firefighters from Engine 960 conducted a thorough search of the apartment. That's where they found an unresponsive dog,” a department release stated.

“Firefighters carried the dog out of the apartment and quickly began resuscitation efforts.”

They dug into a Fido Bag, which contained a reusable oxygen mask specially designed to fit the nose of small animals, including cats and rabbits, as well as the muzzle of a large dog.

First responders used bottles of water to cool down the dog as they aided the animal.

“As the dog laid on the sidewalk receiving treatment, the owners watched from a distance,” the release stated.

“After a few minutes the dog regained consciousness and began to wag its tail. Shortly after, the dog was happily reunited with its family.”

Fido Bags are supplied to local fire departments and professional K9 handlers by The Fetch Foundation.

The Glendale Fire Department assisted in the rescue effort, according to the release.
