Celebrate Earth Day with tree-planting event in Phoenix

Local sustainable living nonprofit Keep Phoenix Beautiful will add to Earth Day efforts this Monday.

The group will host an “Earth Day Tree Planting” event this Monday, April 22, which falls on Earth Day. Residents are welcome to help plant trees at the Rio Salado Habitat Trailhead at 3203 S. 16th St., in Phoenix.

In partnership with the city of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department and sponsored by Verizon, organizers will plant 42 trees as well as shrubs and a variety of pollinators to honor Keep Phoenix Beautiful's 42nd anniversary.

Join from 8 to 11 a.m. for a fun, earth-friendly morning.

Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 that demonstrates support for environmental protection. First taking place on April 22, 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated around the world by Earthday.org including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries.

Keep Phoenix Beautiful will host other events this weekend as well.

Look for a cleanup event starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 20 at Pierson Street Community Garden, 1822 W. Pierson St., in Phoenix. Teams will clean, green, and beautify the community around the Pierson Street Community Garden. All cleanup kits and supplies provided.

Also Saturday, volunteer groups will weed, water, plant, harvest, and clean up litter from 9 to 11 a.m. at Mountain View Garden, 9901 N. 7th Ave., in Phoenix. Guests should wear closed-toed shoes, hats, and sunscreen while also bringing a water bottle.

Founded in 1982, Keep Phoenix Beautiful is a local, sustainably-minded nonprofit and an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful.
