Dr. Miller’s distinguished academic career spans decades of teaching, research and advocacy focused on civil rights and the rhetoric of justice. A long-time faculty member in the Department of English at Arizona State University, he now holds the title of professor emeritus and has been instrumental in shaping scholarly discourse on race, language and social change both locally and nationally. His research explores the rhetoric and songs of the civil rights movement, offering fresh insights into the linguistic and cultural roots of America’s struggle for equality.
Among his notable scholarly contributions are his books “Martin Luther King’s Biblical Epic: His Great, Final Speech” and “Voice of Deliverance: The Language of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Its Sources.” The latter was widely reviewed and praised, including in The Washington Post, and has become a foundational text in the study of King’s rhetorical craft. His published essays extend to figures such as Malcolm X, Jackie Robinson, Frederick Douglass and Fannie Lou Hamer, reflecting a broad and deep engagement with African American history and rhetoric.
Colleagues and students alike have lauded Dr. Miller not only for his scholarship, but for his mentorship and leadership. Throughout his tenure at ASU, he served in key administrative roles, contributed to interdisciplinary dialogues on race and democracy, and taught generations of students whose lives were shaped by his commitment to intellectual rigor and ethical engagement. His work with the Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict and other university initiatives underscored his belief in education as a vehicle for social transformation.
The Paradise Valley Diversity Award places Dr. Miller among a distinguished group of community leaders who have advanced the cause of diversity and inclusion across the Valley of the Sun. The annual event brings together residents, civic leaders and advocates to reflect on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy and to celebrate those working toward a more equitable society.
Dr. Miller’s recognition is not only a testament to his academic achievements but also an affirmation of the enduring impact that thoughtful scholarship and dedicated civic engagement can have on a community.
