A call for refugee support

OPINION — In this fraught time when so many freedoms are endangered, this letter calls for support for vetted refugee immigrants.

This October, the Department of Homeland Security cut the 30-day refugee termination notice to a mere 10 days – endangering previously granted work authorization, ability to support children and applications for green cards.

Historically, termination of thoroughly vetted refugees has been rare because refugees are identified overseas and go through years of security vetting, medical screenings and in-person DHS interviews. Now, DHS has begun systematically revisiting previously settled cases. A 10-day deadline makes it nearly impossible for individuals and families to get legal help or gather evidence needed to avoid being detained or deported.
