Teen arrested in connection with robbery attempts in Goodyear

A 16-year-old was arrested in connection with a series of robberies and attempted robberies in Goodyear.

The incidents started around 11:30 a.m. Monday, when Goodyear police responded to a bank near McDowell Road and Estrella Parkway. Police said they received a call of someone demanding money from a teller. The suspect allegedly threatened that he had a gun and stated no one would get hurt if they listened to him.

The suspect then fled in a taxi prior to police arrival.

About 20 minutes later, police responded to a bank near Dysart and McDowell roads. The caller reported a suspicious subject who they thought was going to rob the bank. Police said the suspect matched the description of the subject from the prior incident.

While inside the bank, the suspect was asked to remove his mask, but he instead walked out and left again in a taxi. Police began working with the taxi company to get additional information.

Around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a bank near Indian School and Litchfield roads after the caller reported a person looking through the front window of the bank. Police said the person was wearing the same clothing the subject from the day before had worn. However, the person left the area in a taxi.

Goodyear detectives contacted the taxi company and tracked the cab to a housing community north of Litchfield Park near Litchfield and Bethany Home roads. As officers arrived, they saw the suspect wearing the same clothing, fleeing the area and were able to detain him without incident.

The suspect was identified as a 16-year-old Litchfield Park resident with two prior armed robbery convictions.

Goodyear detectives also learned the suspect had attempted numerous additional bank robberies on both Tuesday and Wednesday in other cities, police said.

The suspect was booked into Maricopa County Juvenile Detention and faces charges of armed robbery and attempted robbery.
