Plan needed for AI in the workplace

Posted

OPINION — Like it or not, AI is affecting all of our lives. The rapidly advancing technology is solving increasingly complex problems, creating realistic images and videos and more long-form content. The US AI market size was projected to be over $165 billion by the end of 2025 and to grow to about $750 billion by 2030.

Amid concern about the burst of the “AI bubble,” AI must be rolled out responsibly, with national prosperity top of mind. The AI revolution could lead to 12 million job transitions by 2030, while increasing electricity demand tenfold. Arizona State University is already updating its curriculum to include new degrees and courses to better prepare students for the changing workforce. More must be done to ensure everyday Americans aren’t saddled with higher energy costs and job loss from AI. Leading the AI revolution should not cost America the wealth of its working people.

To “make AI work for all Americans,” Arizona’s U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly recently unveiled a plan to ensure that everyday Americans, not just the massive corporations investing in AI, benefit from its advance.

Fair cost sharing, sustainable and reliable infrastructure, worker protection and community partnership are several guiding principles for building AI infrastructure mentioned in Kelly’s plan. It promotes rapid, diversified deployment, smart permitting, grid resiliency and more. Sen. Kelly’s plan helps ensure the workforce, and it promotes responsible development.

Whether we like it or not, the AI revolution is here.

While we must win the race to develop it first, Arizonans and all Americans are counting on lawmakers to put up guardrails around the technology. We are fortunate that our leaders are determined to make AI work for all of us.
