The Mesa City Council voted 7-0 on a $153,000 contract increase that is to provide additional netting to prevent birds from nesting at a Mesa Police Department substation at their June 2 meeting.
The proposal increases the dollar limit of a Southwest Avian Solutions contract from $57,200 to $210,200.
According to council documents, the contract provides installation services of devices such as netting or spikes to deter pigeons and other birds from nesting and roosting on city buildings and other various structures.
The specific location in question is the Fiesta Police Department District substation, which the council documents say has a severe pigeon infestation.
“This dollar limit increase is needed to install pigeon netting in the parking lot of the Fiesta PD District substation,” the council documents stated. “The substation has a severe pigeon problem which is causing biohazard conditions and damage to city property. This is a one-time increase to cover the cost of this project.”
Council documents state the contract increase will be funded by the Facilities Management and Mesa PD operating budgets.
