The GEN1 office building at GSQ is hosting an urban beekeeping and native pollinator program to encourage community awareness around local environmental sustainability.
In partnership with beekeeping company Alvéole, the office building is home to a rooftop hive of approximately 30,000 docile honeybees, along with two wild bee homes positioned between the GEN1 building and the parking garage. The structures provide shelter for native, stinger-less solitary pollinators such as leafcutter, mason, and wool carder bees.
The installations serve as active habitats and ecological research tools. Honey samples from the rooftop colony are sent to a laboratory for analysis to map local floral diversity, and nesting data from the wild bee homes provides insight into on-site biodiversity.
