New census data released Thursday shows continued growth in Valley cities including Phoenix, Goodyear and Buckeye.
Phoenix is officially the nation’s fifth largest and fastest growing city in the nation, with an 11.2% increase in population since the 2010 census.
The 10 largest cities are the same as in 2010, but the rankings have changed over the past decade. This year, Phoenix beat out Philadelphia for the fifth-largest spot.
The only cities with a greater population than Arizona’s capital city are New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston.
Buckeye and Goodyear were in the top 10 fastest growing cities. Buckeye, which is categorized as a western suburb of Phoenix, grew 80% in the last decade, and has a current population of 91,000 people.

Population at the county level also increased. Maricopa county's population density has increased 15.8% since 2010.
Nationwide data indicates that people are still increasingly gravitating toward cities. Many middle-America counties even saw a decrease in population as the U.S. population grows increasingly metropolitan. In 2000, 84.3% of the population lived in a metro area—today that number is 86.3%.
