Coyote sightings reported in Litchfield Park neighborhoods

Posted

City officials in Litchfield Park are reminding residents to remain cautious after recent reports of coyotes in residential areas.

While sightings may be surprising, officials said coyotes are a natural part of the Sonoran Desert ecosystem and are generally wary of people. However, feeding or approaching the animals can cause them to lose their natural fear of humans.

Residents who encounter a coyote should not approach or feed it and should keep children and pets safely indoors. If a coyote approaches, officials advise standing tall, waving arms and making loud noises to appear larger. Running away is discouraged, as it may trigger a chase response.

Pet owners are encouraged to keep animals on a leash, avoid walks at dawn and dusk when coyotes are most active, and refrain from leaving pet food or water outside overnight.

To reduce attractants, residents should secure garbage cans, collect fallen fruit and remove outdoor food sources such as bird seed. Small pets should be kept indoors, especially at night.

Officials said taking these precautions can help prevent conflicts and keep both residents and wildlife safe.
