Goodyear is making changes to 25 of its busiest intersections starting Dec. 8., the city announced Tuesday.
Traffic signals will change from a lagging left-turn arrow to a leading left-turn arrow, meaning the vehicles turning left at these intersections will get a green turn arrow before the main traffic light turns green.
“This change will ease congestion and allow for better traffic flow in the city by permitting vehicles turning left to proceed through the intersection first and not block through traffic,” said Hugh Bigalk, Goodyear Traffic Engineer.
“Instituting these changes will help move traffic along roadways that see heavier traffic during peak hours and also during incidents on I-10 when traffic is forced to exit the freeway onto city streets,” he said.
Other Valley communities have already made the switch, including Chandler in 2017.
“These adjustments will align Goodyear intersections with other surrounding communities,” the city of Goodyear stated in an announcement. “A recent pilot test of this concept was used at the intersection of Bullard Avenue and Van Buren Street and produced great results.”
Below is a list of the intersections that will be changed to a leading left-turn arrow. The changes will take place between Dec. 8 - 10.
Intersections changing to leading left-turn arrow changes:
Litchfield Road & Van Buren Street
Litchfield Road & Test Drive
