Affordable housing to be built next to Phoenix's Acacia Library

Posted

An affordable housing apartment building is planned to be built next to Phoenix’s Acacia Library.

The 20-unit apartment building, being referred to as Acacia Affordable Housing, is planned to be built on 0.58 acres north of the library branch, which is northwest of Eighth Street and Townley Avenue.

The property owner, Phoenix-based Footprint Properties LLC, received preliminary site plan approval from the city on July 6.

The Acacia branch opened in 1969. Historical aerial photographs from the Maricopa County Assessor’s Office show the Acacia Affordable Housing property has been vacant since at least 1949.

City documents show plans for the building to be three stories and 38 feet, 5.5 inches tall. The building’s address will be 8910 N. Eighth St.

To move into affordable housing, a person or family must make at most 80% of the area median income. Affordable housing requirements set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development require that rent does not exceed 30% of the income of a family, with adjustments for the number of bedrooms in a unit.

Other than the Acacia library to the south, the property is bordered by other apartment buildings to the north, single-family housing to the east and a shopping center anchored by Harbor Freight and Planet Fitness to the west.
