Drivers in the West Valley need to prepare for heavier-than-normal traffic this weekend with NASCAR racing and Arizona Cardinals football attracting fans Saturday and Sunday.
ADOT officials said that Interstate 10 in the West Valley will be busiest in the morning Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5-6, as fans make the drive to Phoenix Raceway, where two days of racing will be capped off Sunday afternoon with the NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race.
Traffic is expected to pick up starting at sunrise each day, according to ADOT. In addition to I-10, westbound and northbound Loop 202 are expected to get a fair share of drivers heading to the track from the East Valley, transportation officials said.
Southbound I-17 is scheduled to be closed between Greenway Road and Northern Avenue this weekend for construction. So, fans who normally would plan on using southbound I-17 to get to westbound I-10 should instead consider using westbound and southbound Loop 101 across the West Valley, ADOT advises.
With the Arizona Cardinals playing the Seattle Seahawks at State Farm Stadium on Sunday afternoon, drivers can expect even busier traffic conditions along southbound Loop 101 and I-10 in the Glendale, West Phoenix and Avondale areas after the game is over, officials said.
“Traffic from each of the events will add up, so people should allow extra time and think about waiting for conditions to improve. It might be worth it,” an ADOT official said.
“It also could help to use northbound Loop 101 near the stadium to leave the area. Even then it's likely to be busy.”
Here are details of all road work that will affect drivers from Friday night, Nov. 4, to Monday morning, Nov. 7:
Both Loop 101 ramps to southbound I-17 will closed. Southbound I-17 on-ramps at Yorkshire Drive, Union Hills Drive and Bell Road also will be closed. Detours: Consider exiting ahead of the closure and using southbound 19th or 35th avenues to travel beyond the closure. Note: The southbound I-17 frontage road also will be closed between Cactus Road and Peoria Avenue for paving work.
Both northbound SR 51 ramps to eastbound Loop 101 will be closed as will the northbound SR 51 on-ramp at Union Hills Drive. Detour: Eastbound Loop 101 drivers can consider exiting to southbound Cave Creek Road or southbound SR 51 before using eastbound Bell Road/Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard to reach Loop 101 beyond the closure. Drivers north of Loop 101 can consider using eastbound Pinnacle Peak Road to southbound Pima Road to also reach Loop 101 beyond the closure.
Northbound 48th Street also will be closed north of Broadway Road. Detour: One alternate freeway route is westbound I-10 to eastbound Loop 202 to reach SR 143 from the north. Airport access: Consider exiting westbound I-10 at 24th Street or Buckeye Road while northbound SR 143 is closed.
Scheduled restrictions include eastbound I-10 narrowed to three lanes between 40th and 48th streets from Friday night to Monday morning for a traffic shift. Eastbound I-10 also will be narrowed at times near Guadalupe Road and near Ray Road. Expect closures of the eastbound I-10 on-ramps at Baseline, Warner and Ray roads and the eastbound off-ramp at Ray Road at times.
I-17 off-ramps at Loop 303 will be restricted with access limited to using Sonoran Desert Drive (east of I-17). I-17 on-ramps at Loop 303 will remain open. Detour: Alternate routes include westbound SR 74 to southbound Lake Pleasant Parkway to enter Loop 303 beyond the closure.
19th Avenue will be narrowed to one lane in both directions near I-17. Expect southbound I-17 frontage road closures in the Durango Curve area. Detour: Alternate routes include Buckeye Road for east-west travel and Seventh or 27th avenues for north-south travel in the area.
