Kellis football has won its first two games this year, after one win in the last three years.

And the Cougars won their first West Valley Preps player of the week award in a longer span of time than that.

Kellis quarterback Issac Matthews won the 2021 Week 1 player of the week vote by a comfortable margin, garnering 813 of the 2,467 votes cast.

In the Cougars' 32-26 win over Sierra Linda Sept. 3 Matthews did it all, completing 17 of 29 passes for 219 yards and a touchdown and running for 213 yards and four touchdowns on 19 carries.

He beat two more senior quarterbacks to win the vote

Millennium quarterback Blake Sparks placed second with 482 votes. In the Tigers' 46-14 rout of Willow Canyon, Sparks finished 15 for 23 passing for 224 yards and two touchdowns, plus two more rushing touchdowns.

In third place was Shadow Ridge quarterback Seth Gallardo. In the  Stallions 54-0 opening rout of Avondale Westview, gallardo went 4-11 passing for 126 yards, and a touchdown and had 10 carries for 113 yards and four touchdowns.

For the sixth straight year, player of the week honorees, including Matthews, will win more than bragging rights.
