The city of Goodyear collected $152.1 million in sales tax revenue during the 2024 fiscal year, a 32% increase from the previous year.
Officials from Goodyear's Finance Department attribute the growth to a rise in population and increased commercial activity across key sectors.
Sales tax revenue is a primary funding source for city operations, supporting public safety, infrastructure maintenance, and other essential services. Some of the revenue increase was offset by agreements made with developers to fund public infrastructure projects.
The city issued more than 3,300 building permits in 2024, double the number from prior years, reflecting increased housing and commercial construction.
"In the past year, the city of Goodyear has made significant strides in infrastructure development," stated Jared Askelson, finance director in Goodyear's 2024 annual comprehensive financial report. "(These investments are) elevating its urban infrastructure to meet community needs, which has stimulated the City’s economic and social vitality."
Several large employers, including Amazon, UPS, and Abrazo Healthcare, maintain operations in Goodyear. The city has also attracted new businesses, such as WinCo Foods and Shake Shack, which are expected to contribute to future revenue growth.
Officials say the availability of land and recent infrastructure projects, including the Goodyear Civic Square, have played a role in attracting these companies.
Goodyear’s estimated population now stands at 116,460, driven by new residential developments and ongoing economic expansion. "Goodyear’s population has surged in recent years due to job opportunities and quality of life," stated Askelson.
