Goodyear council chooses Brannon Hampton as next vice mayor

Term begins June 18

Posted

Goodyear will get a new vice mayor beginning Friday, June 18.

The City Council voted unanimously during regular session Monday, June 7, to appoint Councilman Brannon Hampton to the position after a motion by his predecessor, Vice Mayor Bill Stipp, who has served in the role since June 2019.

“Go get ’em, tiger," the vice mayor said to Hampton after making the motion seconded by Councilman Joe Pizzillo.

“Thank you, thank you,” Hampton responded. “Big shoulders to fill.”

“This is really good,” Mayor Georgia Lord said before calling for a vote. “I think you chose somebody who’s been waiting for this, and I look forward to having him as my vice.”

The mayor garnered laughs when said she planned to keep Hampton busy.

“I’m going to put him to work. I’m usually so good about it, but I’m not going to be in the next year,” she said. “I’m going to put some pressure on you.”

While vice mayor terms are two years, Hampton’s term will run 18 months and expire Dec. 31, 2022.

City Clerk Darcie McCracken said staff recommended the shorter term to accommodate the new fall election cycle for city and town councils.

Goodyear’s next city council election is scheduled for August 2022, and the next vice mayor will be chosen after the new council is seated in January 2023.

Hampton, who has lived in Goodyear with his wife, Rebecca, and their three children for more than 10 years, was elected to his first four-year term in 2017. Before running for council, he served on the 2025 Goodyear General Plan committee and graduated from the Goodyear Citizens Academy.

According to his biography on goodyearaz.gov, Hampton holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration from Grand Canyon University and worked at Palo Verde Generating Station for 17 years before joining Edward Jones as a financial adviser.

He represents the city on the Maricopa Association of Governments Economic Development Committee, Maricopa County Community Development Advisory Committee, City Council Audit Subcommittee and the National League of Cities’ Community and Economic Development Federal Advocacy Committee.
