West Valley school district looks to expand special ed services beyond its borders

The Deer Valley Unified School District Governing Board will consider an agreement Tuesday that would allow students from the Madison Elementary School District to receive specialized special-education services at Deer Valley Unified’s Vista Peak campus.

The proposal grows out of DVUSD’s Futures Analysis, which recommended expanding services at Vista Peak to increase the number of students the campus can serve. Under the plan, Deer Valley Unified would make its specialized programs, staffing, and facilities available to students from neighboring districts that may lack the capacity, personnel, or expertise to serve children with more intensive disabilities. District officials say the arrangement could also generate additional revenue for DVUSD while strengthening partnerships with neighboring school districts.

Madison Elementary School District serves more than 5,000 K-8 students across eight schools in central and north-central Phoenix, generally between Seventh Avenue and 32nd Street and Northern and Camelback avenues.
