West-MEC wins West Valley innovation award

Semiconductor clean room earns honor

Western Maricopa Education Center received WESTMARC's West Valley Excellence in Education & Workforce Development Award Oct. 22 at the annual Best of the West Awards, recognizing the career and technical education district's approach to preparing students for careers in Arizona's semiconductor industry.

The award honors educational programs, organizations and partnerships that enhance quality of life in the West Valley.

West-MEC earned the recognition for its advanced manufacturing program and the opening of the nation's first K–12 semiconductor cleanroom of its size at its Northeast Campus this spring. Developed in collaboration with TSMC, Amkor and Intel, the facility offers hands-on training with industry-standard equipment and technology.

Students gain practical skills and earn industry-recognized credentials that prepare them for careers as semiconductor technicians.

“We are honored to receive this recognition, which would not be possible without the expertise of our industry partners and the dedication of our educators in bringing something truly innovative to life,” West-MEC Superintendent Scott Spurgeon stated in a press release. “By aligning education with industry, we're giving students a competitive advantage while building a pipeline of skilled workers for our region’s growing industries.”

West-MEC plans to expand its advanced manufacturing training model to three additional locations in the next two years. The next milestone comes in January 2027, when students at the new Southeast Campus, located near Thomas Road and Loop 101, will begin training in the district's second semiconductor cleanroom.

In May 2027, West-MEC's first cohort of Advanced Manufacturing students will complete the program, equipped with the technical skills and industry-recognized credentials needed to enter the workforce.
