Update: Glendale police name suspect in officer involved shooting
Posted
UPDATE, 1:30 p.m.:
Glendale police have identified the suspect in Saturday’s officer involved shooting.
The suspect is 23-year-old Alexander Mear, who is currently facing at least two counts of aggravated assault. He is recovering from his injuries and is listed in stable condition at a local hospital.
ORIGINAL REPORT:
A Glendale Police Department officer-involved shooting left one man with critical injuries.
Glendale police received a 911 call just before 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30. The individual who called was making threatening comments toward police officers and said he was in the area of 59th Avenue just south of Northern.
An officer arrived on the scene and spotted an individual who was acting erratically. The individual was not only allegedly making threatening comments toward the officer, but the suspect was carrying what appears to be a homemade wooden spear-like object, investigators say. Police describe the object as being between 3 and 4 feet in length with a sharp point on the end.
A second officer arriving on scene spotted the suspect charging toward the first officer. That secondary officer yelled out commands for the suspect to stop and drop his weapon. When the suspect would not comply that officer fired several shots toward the suspect.
The suspect was detained and officers immediately began providing first aid to the individual. The suspect is described as a 23-year-old white male who suffered critical injuries.
At this time, these injuries appear to be non-life threatening.
The suspect’s name is currently unavailable.
The investigation is ongoing.
Glendale Police released the initial 9-1-1 call made before Saturday evening’s officer involved shooting. The caller identifies himself as Alexander Mear, who is the suspect in this case.
