The Mountain Ridge High School Marching Band -- the Pride of the West -- placed second out of 40 high school bands participating in the 66th Annual University of Arizona Band Day at Arizona Stadium in Tucson. It marked the best performance of the year for Mountain Ridge’s band and guard.
The University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music Band Department hosted the event that featured the Southwest’s finest marching bands. The Pride of Arizona Marching Band, under the direction of Chad Shoopman, director of athletic bands, and Yudai Ueda, assistant director of athletic bands, also presented two performances.
Featuring bands from across Arizona, ranging in size from 30 to over 250 members, each band is evaluated by a panel of expert judges from around the nation in a number of categories including visual execution, musical presentation, and overall performance. The groups receive ratings, and any band that is deemed by the judges as deserving of such recognition receives the prestigious Nunamaker Award.
Approximately 10,000 to 15,000 spectators attend Band Day yearly.
The Mountain Ridge High School Marching Band has performed in the Tournament of Roses Parade, has twice been invited to Hawaii to attend the 70th and 75th Pearl Harbor Anniversary events, attended the 2009 Presidential Inauguration for President Obama, performed at the 2015 Super Bowl and has twice attended the Fiesta Bowl National Championships.
