No criminal conduct found in DVUSD special-needs student case

Family says it is considering legal options as district investigation remains ongoing

No criminal conduct was found by agencies that reviewed allegations involving the treatment of a 16-year-old nonverbal autistic student at Mountain Ridge High School this past spring, although the school district says its investigation remains ongoing and the student’s family is considering its legal options.

Glendale Police investigated allegations of child neglect before discontinuing its criminal investigation in April and forwarding the matter to the Arizona Attorney General’s Office. In August, an AG spokesperson confirmed to the Independent the office reviewed the matter and found no criminal conduct had occurred.

Deer Valley Unified School District, asked for comment following that determination, referred to a statement issued in June saying its investigation “remains ongoing” and that the district “has been and will continue to cooperate fully with all relevant agencies throughout the investigative process.”
