Glendale council approves code change enforcing urban camping

The Glendale City Council unanimously approved a city code change once again enforcing urban camping bans for the homeless at its Jan. 14 meeting,

A 6-3 Supreme Court decision in June 2024 on the Johnson v Grants Pass case, ruled that local governments enforcing urban camping restrictions on public property does not constitute “cruel and unusual punishment” prohibited by the Eighth Amendment.

As Vice Mayor Lauren Tolmachoff said, on Nov. 5 Arizona voters passed Proposition 312, which allows property owners to apply for property tax refunds if local governments do not enforce “public nuisance laws,” including urban camping fans.
