Flags across the country on Friday will fly at half-staff honoring the thousands of lives lost in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks 25 years ago.
But there’s a one-of-a-kind flag with close ties to the local community that has come home to the West Valley that will be hard not to notice.
The National Unity Flag, a massive symbol created in Arizona in the weeks and months following the attacks, stands at three stories tall and measures more than 1,000 square feet. It incorporates the flags of all 50 states and six U.S. districts. Its centerpiece represents the face of the Statue of Liberty and bears the names of all victims on 9/11 — 343 firefighters in red print, 72 law enforcement officers in blue, and the lost civilians in black. The flag’s red, white and blue boarder carries the words: 3,046 Lost and 290,000,000 United.
