Students across Higley Unified School District are returning to campuses this school year to find student-selected improvement projects completed through the district's School Participatory Budgeting program.
The initiative gives students the opportunity to identify campus needs, develop proposals, evaluate costs and participate in a schoolwide vote to determine which projects receive funding. Student leaders at each campus oversee the process, gathering input from their peers and working within established budgets to develop proposals.
After ideas are collected, students narrow the options to three final proposals. Schools then hold elections in which all students can vote for their preferred project. The proposal receiving the most votes is funded and implemented.
