Gilbert prepares drone delivery rules

New Arizona law limits local regulation

Gilbert is preparing to regulate where the infrastructure for a coming generation of commercial drone deliveries can be placed while acknowledging that a new state law leaves the town relatively little authority over the drones themselves.

Town planning staff presented proposed Land Development Code changes to the Town Council during a study session, laying out restrictions on drone docking stations and drop boxes near residential neighborhoods and requiring airport consultation for facilities close to an airport.

Now it will go before council Tuesday for possible approval. The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. at Gilbert Town Hall, 50 E. Civic Center Drive, Gilbert.
