Sundt Construction receives state grant for workforce training

Sundt Construction, currently leading work on the Gilbert Water Treatment Project, has been awarded a grant as part of Arizona’s BuildItAZ Apprenticeship Initiative.

The grant is one of seven totaling more than $1 million in Round 2 funding aimed at expanding high-quality construction apprenticeship programs across the state.

The journey of Sundt apprentice Destiny Lipkin, a Gilbert-based trainee, from high school to hands-on work exemplifies the program’s impact.

"From dual enrollment to my pre-apprenticeship, and now beginning my apprenticeship, these programs have guided me every step of the way," Lipkin said in an email. “Since I was 16, I've been learning the foundations of heavy equipment operations, supported by knowledgeable mentors who’ve helped turn my passion into a clear career path.”

Lipkin’s work on the Gilbert Water Treatment Project reflects the broader mission of the BuildItAZ program: to grow a skilled, diverse workforce ready to meet Arizona’s booming construction needs.

Since launching in 2023, BuildItAZ has connected nearly 3,000 Arizonans to apprenticeships, with a goal of doubling the number of construction apprentices by 2026. The program provides funding for tuition, tools and wrap-around services like transportation and childcare, helping to eliminate barriers to entry in the skilled trades.

"This BuildItAZ grant is a significant enhancement for Sundt’s workforce development initiatives in Arizona,” Sundt Construction Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer Nicole Calamaio said in a release. “These funds will expand apprenticeship opportunities, empower more women to enter the construction industry, and provide Spanish-speaking residents in Maricopa County with accessible training and career pathways.

"This investment strengthens our commitment to build a diverse, skilled workforce that reflects the communities we serve."
