Developer has groundbreaking for Verde at Cooley Station

The long-awaited Verde at Cooley Station project reached groundbreaking Nov. 19, opening construction on the linchpin piece to the 650-acre master planned community.
Norm Brody, a partner at SB2-Gilbert LLC, the project developer, said Verde at Cooley Station, located on the southwest corner of Williams Field and Recker roads, will be the centerpiece for the overall Cooley Station project.
“From the beginning, our development team has been focused on creating a special, exciting, walkable place loaded with unique wall graphics, large-scale sculpture in public spaces and children's play area, where the citizens of Gilbert from 8 to 80 can come together in Verde's public spaces to enhance their lives by participating in community events, enjoying events at our performance venue or dining at an array of restaurants, shopping at a variety of stores or just hanging out," Brody said.
The $60 million project includes nearly 150,000 square feet of commercial space and 450 multifamily residential units. “The Green” will be a common area for community events, entertainment and activities.
Another 2,000 apartments and 1,000 single-family homes are under development within a quarter mile of Verde at Cooley Station.
The developers have announced the first restaurants to sign a lease: West Alley BBQ, a Tennessee-style barbecue restaurant with live entertainment, and OBON, an Asian dining spot with casual atmosphere.
The development also will include Verde Medical Center and has plans for a commuter rail station to bring people between Phoenix and the East Valley.
Mayor Jenn Daniels hailed the arrival of the project, saying the community has been looking forward to the project for the past 10 years and that it makes the corner a “real gem” for the community.
Daniels also said she appreciated its proximity to Arizona State University’s Polytechnical campus in Mesa.
“I really believe that this is the true connector for ASU Poly to the community,” she said. “I am just so glad that their students will have access to world-class amenities right here and in close proximity.”
