Upscale Singers present Christmas concert

The Upscale Singers are set to present their Christmas concert  “Christmas Memories in Song!”

The concert will take place Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. and Dec. 14 at 4 p.m. at the Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center, located at 33606 North 60th Street in Scottsdale.

There will be the audience favorites, such as “Rise Up, Shepherd, and Follow,” “Sing We Now of Christmas” and a mix of Latin and German, “In Dulce Jubilo.”

There will also be new songs, such as “Somewhere in My Memory,” “That’s Christmas to Me” and the Hanukkah number, “We Are Lights,” which director Catherine Wendt calls “a beautiful melody that hints at the scales you would associate with Jewish music.”

“Upscale Singers have been successful as a chorus for so many years, there’s a certain element we want to keep within expectations and add a little bit from there,” said Wendt, who has taken over from founding director Margaret Miner. “To come in and undo anything doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense.”

“People want to hear some new things, but not too new,” Wendt added. “They really want to feel like it’s Christmas. Here in Arizona, it’s even harder to get that feeling that Christmas is around the corner unless you’re intentional about it. I think these songs definitely kick off those memories, those emotions, those feelings that this IS the holiday season even though we don’t have snow.”

Tickets are $30 for adults and $10 for youths age 18 and under.
