The 9/11 Memorial in New York City is a tribute of remembrance, honoring the 2,977 people killed in the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center site, near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon, as well as the six people killed in the World Trade Center bombing on Feb. 26, 1993, it states at https://www.911memorial.org.
The town of Carefree will commemorate the anniversary of 9/11 with a guest speaker and a program put on by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Carefree resident Bob Jenkins will speak at the event and share his experiences. Jenkins was in one of the Lehman Brothers’ offices, on the 39th floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center, when the first plane hit the building.
“I’ve heard Bob speak to this, maybe about eight years ago, and it’s well worth the hour that you’ll spend,” said Carefree mayor John Crane.
Jenkins also served in the Marine Corp and became a MOS 1371 combat engineer, which is a specialist who uses tools, heavy equipment, and explosives to build structures and clear paths. These specialists work both in combat missions and construction projects.
Jenkins uses that experience to run VETSBuilt Contracting, where he hires often veterans because he believes in “serving those who have served our country,” according to vetsbuilt.com.
Jenkins spoke at a 2019 Carefree Veteran’s Day honoring event as well. To view it, click here.
The Black Mountain Foothills Chapter of DARS will put on a program to honor the day. They often provide coffee and speakers for other events, as well, such as the Memorial Day event.
