Tempe City Council adopted a notice of intention at its Dec. 19 regular meeting to increase utility rates for water, wastewater and solid waste services to ensure the financial stability of the departments.
Council voted unanimously to adopt the notice of intention, passing 7-0 with Councilmember Randy Keating attending the meeting virtually. The council members had no additional comments or discussion about the item.
With this adoption, a public hearing on the proposed increases has been set for 6 p.m. Feb. 20, 2025.
Tempe is seeking this increase after a study conducted this year reported that additional funding is necessary for the operation of these utilities.
Staff recommends an increase of $7.7 million for water services, $5.9 million for wastewater services and $750,000 for solid waste services, according to a city staff report.
Tempe single-family residential customers who receive the three utilities can anticipate an additional $7.87 in their monthly bill, if council adopts the proposed rate after the public hearing in February.
