Scottsdale high schoolers launch free STEM program for kids

Two Notre Dame Preparatory high school students will launch a free STEM program for children Aug. 29 at Desert Foothills Library, 38443 N. School House Road, Cave Creek, and the Holland Center, 34250 N. 60th St., Scottsdale.

The "Mini Minds" program is catered to first- through fifth-graders and will cover a wide range of science topics with hands-on learning experiences, according to Samantha Lika, co-founder of the program.

Samantha and her best friend, Margaret Haldeman, came up with the idea for Mini Minds in STEM programs at their school. They noticed that not many other girls were joining the groups, so during their junior year of high school, they started "Girls in STEM," to encourage and connect their fellow students with women professionals in the field.
