As part of a 4-0 vote on a consent agenda during their April 16 meeting, the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority Board of Directors approved two measures that would allow for an expansion of the airport’s rental car facilities. Gila River Indian Community Lt. Gov. Regina Antone and Phoenix Councilmember Jim Waring were absent, according to the unapproved minutes.
The airport is operated by the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority. PMGAA consists of representation from Apache Junction, Mesa, Queen Creek, Gilbert, Gila River Indian Community and Phoenix.
The first action item added $442,282.66 to a contract with Willmeng Construction Inc. for car rental facility improvements. The improvements mainly consist of an additional car rental counter in the terminal and various other improvements, including electrical facilities and removal and replacement of pumping soil underneath an existing car wash at the facility. The second item modified the contract to allow for the additional funds to be implemented.
“Our current car care facility is outdated, inadequate and lacks the capacity and efficiency needed to service our customers effectively. This facility needs to be upgraded and expanded to accommodate the increased number of rental cars currently in service,” the board agenda stated.
The agenda did not state how long the upgrades would take but did state that an extra 45 days would need to be added to the current contract.
