The Mesa City Council voted 7-0 to approve a $53.5 million contract for renovation of the police headquarters building during its Feb. 24 meeting.
Council documents say the Mesa Police Department headquarters is more than 50 years old and needs its building infrastructure replaced.
“This includes mechanical, electrical, plumbing and life safety. Elevator refurbishment and backup power enhancement are also needed. The building configuration does not meet the needs of the department and is not conducive to a customer-friendly environment,” council documents state.
Planned renovations include removal and replacement of all building systems, relocation of existing internal stairwells to the exterior of building, refurbishment of two elevators and expansion of one, removal and redesign of interior walls and transition of parking and storage in building extension to interior space.
There also will be a series of programming enhancements to the building, such as relocation of the Fallen Officer Memorial, a new lobby with increased size, privacy and utility, a new community/media room, a multipurpose breakroom and more.
Council staff recommended the contract be given to Willmeng Construction Inc. According to a council presentation, construction will begin in spring 2025 and would be completed in the spring of 2027. The contract would be funded by 2022 public safety bonds.
