Mario Garner has been named president of Dignity Health East Valley, which includes Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert medical centers, as well as Arizona General Hospital-Mesa.
Garner officially began the role on Oct. 22.
Garner joins the East Valley hospitals from St. Luke’s Health-The Vintage Hospital in Houston, an affiliate of CommonSpirit Health. He served as president there for seven years, leading initiatives to improve patient care and employee engagement.
His previous roles include chief operations officer for the Southeast Market of Memorial Hermann Health System and chief executive officer of Memorial Hermann Pearland Hospital.
Garner also served as CEO of New Orleans East Hospital, where he oversaw the return of acute healthcare services to areas heavily impacted by Hurricane Katrina.
“It is an honor to lead Dignity Health East Valley during such a pivotal time in healthcare and exciting time within CommonSpirit Health’s ministry,” Garner said in a statement. “Building on the strong foundation of exceptional quality and care, I am eager to collaborate with the leadership team, caregivers, medical staff, and communities to continue the path toward innovation, patient-centered care, and operational excellence.”
Garner holds a doctorate of education from the University of Houston, a master of healthcare administration from Tulane University, and a bachelor of science in microbiology from Louisiana State University.
He is affiliated with the American College of Healthcare Executives, the National Association of Health Service Executives, and the Association for University Programs in Health Administration.
He also served as national chair of the Louisiana State University National Alumni Association’s global board of directors in 2024.
“Mario is a true visionary and will be a great complement to the outstanding team at Dignity Health East Valley,” said Anthony Houston, president of Dignity Health’s Arizona Market, in a statement. “He will help build on the strong reputation of excellence and growth for which our East Valley hospitals and health care centers are known.”
