Gilbert is moving toward an increase of its customer rates for wastewater and its environmental compliance fee.
Town Council approved Dec. 13 publication of a notice to intention to raise rates and fees, a first step toward an increase, which would take effect in April. The vote was 6-0 with Council Member Laurin Hendrix absent.
The monthly flat fees for all residential customers would increase by $2.51 for environmental compliance and $8.02 for wastewater under the proposal.
The move is being made to offset increases in system operating and commodity costs and to maintain minimum fund balances to assure long-term financial stability of the services, according to town documents.
The town first discussed the need to make the rate increases at its annual budget retreat last March. The town has since then completed a rate study on the matter.
Any rate increase would be considered at a public hearing Feb. 21 during the council meeting. The rates would go into effect on all bills issued after April 3.
The town is planning two open houses to answer questions about the increases. The first will be 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at the Public Safety Training Facility’s Atlas Auditorium, 6860 S. Power Road, Gilbert. The second will be 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, at the Gilbert Police Department Amphitheater, 75 E. Civic Center Drive, Gilbert.
