The Gilbert Public Schools Governing Board unanimously approved a fourth revision to its 2024-25 budget on June 10, allowing the district to capture an additional $370,000 in budget capacity.
The revision was made possible after district staff discovered an increase in the budget balance carryforward during a final review of state reports while uploading the third revision.
“We found that we could increase our budget balance carry forward by about $370,000,” Associate Superintendent Bonnie Betz said. “So we are here to present the fully final, final budget revision for FY 2025.”
Under Arizona law, school districts are allowed to revise their budgets outside statutory deadlines in order to ensure accurate reporting and full access to allowable funds.
“If we don't revise the budget, we lose it,” Betz said. “The Department of Ed(ucation) does not give it to us. So we have to revise our budget to be able to adopt that additional budget capacity.”
Board Member Jill Humpherys praised staff for identifying the opportunity in time.
“I imagine that keeping track of our budget is very complex and so we appreciate that you were able to catch this in a timely fashion so that we could do the revision and obtain that higher budget limit,” she said.
The revised figure brings the district’s Maintenance and Operations budget to about $282.95 million, reflecting an increase from the previous version approved May 6.
The board approved the revision unanimously during the June 11 business meeting.
