Council OKs contract for large south Chandler widening

Posted

There are still a few major widening projects in the city of Chandler’s long-term capital project plans.

The Chandler City Council agreed that one such project should be started this year.

Council approved a Jan. 22 consent agenda that included a $22.36 million contract with Achen-Gardner Construction LLC for widening and a list of other improvements along Lindsay Road in south Chandler.

The project — which stretches from Ocotillo Road to Hunt Highway — includes adding a lane in both north and south directions, bike lanes, a raised landscaped median, curb, gutter, sidewalk, traffic signal upgrades, streetlights, storm drainage, and utility improvements.

The Salt River Project will handle undergrounding and relocating distribution lines, according to a staff report.

Council also approved a $2.9 million contract with Consultant Engineering, Inc., for construction management services and another $123,000 to Kimberly Horn and Associates for post-design services.

Lindsay Road, south of Karsten Drive, is one of the few major streets in south Chandler that’s still only one lane in each direction with sand shoulders and no curbs.

A city news release about the approvals states the project will also include American with Disabilities Act upgrades like wheelchair ramps, irrigation and block walls.

The city states work on the project is expected to begin this spring.
