Chandler schools, UofA agree on semiconductor curriculum deal

Posted

The Chandler Unified School District governing board made another decision Aug. 6 in its attempt to lock down ownership over curriculum it creates.

A modification to a contract between the district and the University of Arizona solidifies, according to one CUSD administrator, the intellectual property rights to its joint semiconductor program.

Dr. Jessica Edgar, CUSD’s assistant superintendent for pre-K-12 teaching/learning, said as district staff began developing and rolling out the semiconductor curriculum during the past couple years, it became known modifications were being made.

“As we were implementing the curriculum and downloading it into Buzz (Chandler’s learning management system), we realized that every time we download something, there’s going to be a modification,” Edgar told the board. “Truly, the curriculum is the intellectual property of both UofA and the district. So we wanted to make sure that as things change, as emerging technologies change, we need the contract to read ‘in perpetuity,’ as we were both involved in creating this curriculum.”

The board first approved the contract in late spring 2024. It governs a program that involves regular semiconductor CUSD classes, currently only available at Hamilton High School.

CUSD and the university are partnered for several curricular and extra-curricular tech initiatives. There have been summer events focused on semiconductors happening for years.

In March, 59 Chandler Unified high school students received certificates for completing a multi-semester university-staffed afterschool cybersecurity clinic.
