The Chandler Unified School District Governing Board chose Vice President Barb Mozdzen to represent the district in voting on the Arizona School Boards Association’s 2025 legislative agenda at a Sept. 6 assembly.
The Chandler Unified School District Governing Board made another decision Aug. 6 in its relationship with the Arizona School Boards Association.
But as has been the case over the past three years, what used to be a routine and/or consent-agenda decision is now contested and discussed.
The board unanimously chose board Vice President Barb Mozdzen to be the board’s delegate who’ll vote on the 2025 ASBA political agenda, to be voted on at the Delegate Assembly on Saturday, Sept. 6.
Board President Patti Serrano nominated Mozdzen, a longtime board member and delegate and representative of the district for many events, boards and meetings through the years.
Mozdzen accepted the nomination, conditional upon her being able to attend the event in person.
Board member Ryan Heap wondered aloud if there might be an opportunity for one of the newer board members, as he and the other three members all began serving in 2023 or later. He said he couldn’t make the commitment, but wondered if board member Kurt Rohrs was interested.
“I actually voted against ASBA membership, if you recall,” Rohrs replied. “Also, I was wondering if we, as board members will get to review the political agenda in advance of the vote.”
Mozdzen pointed out that not only are a few pages of main proposed political or legislative points and objectives outlined in the board’s Aug. 6 meeting packet, she would welcome getting direction from the board on such voting at the Aug. 20 regular meeting.
One of the dozens of priorities listed in the ASBA proposed political agenda is “increase public school tax credit donation limits to match those allowed for private schools.”
A staff report states representatives of ASBA member boards “convene to decide the association’s political position on the diverse interests of public school governing boards for the year ahead.”
Boards who do not register their delegates in advance via this form will not be able to vote, it states.
