Chandler Police credit license-plate cams for helping catch robbery suspect

Posted

Chandler Police are touting the usefulness of its license-plate reader technology in locating and arresting a woman accused in two recent armed robberies.

Chalina Harrison, 39, was arrested while attempting to rob a Big 5 sporting goods store at gunpoint on July 7, Chandler Police stated in a news release.

It was the second time she'd committed that same crime in a 4-day span, police stated.

Police state that at about 4:30 p.m. on July 4, officers responded to the AMPM mini-mart on the southwest corner of Chandler Heights Road and Arizona Avenue after a caller reported being robbed at gunpoint.

The caller stated the suspect, later identified as Harrison, left in a black minivan. Upon arrival, officers reviewed video surveillance to find out more.

License-plate reader cameras detected a vehicle matching the witness' description, though Harrison was able to leave the city without being apprehended.

Police state that on July 7, as detectives were actively working on the initial robbery investigation, license plate recognition technology alerted them that the vehicle Harrison occupied in the robbery was back in the city.

Based on that alert, detectives collaborated with the Chandler Real-Time Operations Center, police stated, where staff located the suspect vehicle in the area of Ocotillo Road and Arizona Avenue.

Responding detectives located the suspected vehicle in a shopping center parking lot on the southwest corner of Ocotillo and Arizona Avenue,  across from Hamilton High School.

Minutes later, a caller reported being robbed at gunpoint inside Big 5. Detectives on scene were able to handcuff Harrison and take her into custody as she exited.

Harrison was booked on two counts each of armed robbery with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.  She was taken to jail.
