Chandler mayor, council encourage bicycle use

Posted

Not long before leading hundreds of riders on a short trip around the eastern part of the city, Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke read a proclamation that was hardly about a single ride.

The mayor’s March 23 proclamation about April as Valley Bike Month extolled the virtues and benefits of cycling, ranging from cardiovascular exercise, reduced pollution and less wear-and-tear on local roads.

The mayor and Vice Mayor Angel Encinas took a photo with senior transportation planner Jason Crampton and staff member Nancy Riley.

On April 11, hundreds of Chandler residents and staff joined Hartke for an annual bike-ride event.

Riders met up in a Tumbleweed Park lot where vendors gathered, cyclists prepped and a visit from Maricopa County clean air and environmental awareness mascot Gus T. Breeze was there.

A short group ride, mostly along canal paths, drove home the emphasis on cycling.
