For the past 13 years, Chandler's "For Our City" day of service has always been held in October. Going forward, "For Our City Day in honor of Cesar Chavez" will be held during the last Saturday of March to coincide with the Cesar Chavez holiday. Cesar Chavez Day is a U.S. federal commemorative holiday, proclaimed by President Barack Obama in 2014.
Chandler’s Neighborhood Programs staff and community leaders have been busy preparing to organize volunteers for a variety of beautification projects throughout the Pamela Park neighborhood, near downtown Chandler. Projects include basic yard work, painting homes, spreading gravel, disposing of unwanted items and a general neighborhood cleanup.
Andres Chavez will be in attendance as a project volunteer and help lead a community march of volunteers, starting at noon, from the neighborhood to Folley Park. After the event and community march, volunteers and the surrounding community are invited to Folley Park, 601 E. Frye Road, for a free neighborhood celebratory gathering and light lunch.
Information booths and job opportunities will be on display at the park from city departments, local companies and nonprofit organizations. Opportunities are still available for organizations interested in sponsoring the event, hosting a booth at the community celebration or volunteering.
The city is fortunate to have hundreds of volunteers willing to donate their time and resources to make a difference on this special day of service, and throughout the year. The city thanks, in the release, this year’s generous sponsors who provided cash, in-kind services and volunteer manpower.
